Small-town

So many lifetimes,
never moving beyond
the edge of uncertainty,
instead preferring
small-town bliss and
street facing windows
always burning evening
lights.

Bound to inbred
comfort zones of sight
and scent, endless stories
of long past decades
gently told.

Neighbors invariably
offer their daily greetings
unknowingly speaking
in zen codes.

New generations take
their turn gazing horizons
of the east-west
highway, imagining what
might be.

Later wondering.

What could have been.
